What is the best preparation for a haircut?
Using shampoos and conditioner before or on the day of the haircut will ensure removal of any excess oil or skin build up in the hair. The conditioner will keep the hair tangle free and free flowing. This allows the clippers and shears to easily cut through the hair creating texture. If showering the morning of the hair cut, we recommend to not wear a hat as the heat from the scalp and pressure of the hat will mat the hair down allowing for a less comfortable haircut. If you must use product to manage the look for work we advise using leave in conditioner which will have a light hold on the hair and keep the style unbroken.
What is the best maintenance for hair?
This is a question with several answers. Hair reacts differently from skin. It has its own regulation. Hair and scalp conditions can be caused internally stemming from the body or externally. Internal issues can be auto-immune related, diet, and stress levels can all affect our hair and skin. Our hair and skin are great indicators of current health and will show certain imbalances through blemishes, dandruff and other skin irritations and so forth.
In our shop we see more external related issues. Over shampooing is often a common issue. The hair and scalp have no time to recover from the harsh effects of shampoo (yes many shampoos strip the hair of essential oil) In turn the body starts to produce more oil to compensate and over a long time the client will have more oil then when they began. We do recommend shampooing the hair 2 twice a week with clarifying shampoo to remove any residual product in the air and natural oil build up. Many of our clients use great styling products which are made with great ingredients and are water soluble. Some clients use these products everyday and as a result can tend to build up in the hair and then start to clog the follicle and advance any type of baldness.
Every person is different and may have different skin and hair issues. If the issues such as psoriasis, dry scalp , skin irritation are severe we recommend seeing a dermatologist and then a practicing trichologist for medicinal level treatments. We follow some basic guidelines of minimal shampooing, using conditioner and leave in conditioner daily and minimal styling products.
We also advocate on choosing the right products. This is so important because you are using these on your scalp, skin and hair daily. Your skin will absorb harsh chemicals from this daily use and cause more damage than you realize. We understand good products are not always the cheapest option but there are better choices on the market that allow for great skin and hair. Please please ask us for our feedback as we use and test all types of products professionally and for our personal use.
What products do you recommend and use?
We are always curating different lines of product to best suit our client needs. Our mainstays are Suavecito, Men-u, Uppercut, and Victory products. These lines have products that achieve all types of styles and holds. They are also all cruelty free and NEVER TESTED ON ANIMALS!
Stop using food grade coconut oil in your hair!
There is so much helpful information on the internet with many myths and misinformation regarding beauty and hair care. It had become a trend to use food grade coconut oil in your hair. Use of coconut oil sparingly is not harmful if you use it a few times a year. However there are some that use it pre or post shower regimen. The fact is the coconut oil molecules are to big to be absorbed by the hair and end up just clogging hair follicle pores. This over an extended period of time will actually lead to damage to the hair causing it to break off and hair loss due to the blockage of the follicle. If you prefer coconut oil products this is a better choice ad the oil is emulsified and broken down further for better absorption in the use of these products.
